How have CD sales changed in the last 5 years?

CD sales have seen a major drop in sales due to illegal downloading off the Internet, online sales and CD burning across the world. In 2012, there was a rise in digital albums being purchased. It reached an all time high 6.5 billion units, a rise of 3.1 % since 2011. Due to this, physical music saw a drop of 12.8% in sales of 2012. However, despite this studies still sound physical CD to be the main form of purchase.

ITunes which allowed digital downloading of music first began in 2003.Total revenues for Cd's, vinyl, cassettes and digital downloads in the U.S. dropped from a high of $14.6 billion in 1999 to $9 billion in 2008. By 2007 it had been found out that by 2007 more music had been sold over the Internet then any other form so far. By 2012, digital music had topped physical music and than began to keep increasing whilst physical music sales decreased.

Comparing the sales figures of 2009 and 2010 the figure dropped from 147 million to 114 million this year. In 2007 physical CD took up 60% of the sales whilst digital music took up the other 10%. By 2009 physical CD sales had dramatically dropped to 79% and digital had increased up to 20%

As you can see here on this chart vinyl clearly topped the sales over cassettes and CD when they were at there peek. Then as cassettes came out they dramatically dropped by 1.O million in 14 years. Then CD were made during 1991 and peeked at 1997. however the biggest peek we have seen so far in the digital music which first came out in 2003 then by 2009 saw a major rise in sales which reached 3.5 million in just 6 years.
