Music analyses for 'oh what a night' - lovable rougues

Shot Type
Low medium 3 shot

The lighting this shot is low key.  The key light is this is coming from directly in front of him because of the way their faces are lighted.
The background of this shot is a graffiti wall with their band name on. Location of the song is a party so in this shot it looks like they have gone into an empty room and wrote graffiti all over the wall. As the lyrics are saying ‘your house is a joke, I’m that kind of bloke’ then the camera shows them singing in that room with the graffiti in wall is swing they have no respect for that persons house.
The way the camera is angles in this shot is a low medium shot so it looks as if the singer is leaning over it to make him look more powerful and showing that the three are the main three at the party.

In this shot the lighting is low key, only the people in th middle have there faces lighted. The key light in this is again directly in front of the person because f the way his face is lighted and the person to is left is dark. The way they are standing in this shot is showing karate. This is relevant t the video because the lyrics are saying ‘it’s a god job that I know karate’ this is relating the shot with the lyrics to connect the audience with them. The background behind them is pretty much the same as the first shot, showing that they have grafetied the walls of a room in the girls house.

‘I think your parents might hate me, it’s a good job tha I know karate’

Digipack Analyses

Digipack

This digipak is very dark which could reflect the artist’s genre. The images are of close up serious faces. I think it could include more persuasive things to link it to the audience such as lyrics, a booklet on artist info or more photos. The font is big and colourful to catch attention and there isn’t a lot of writing to make it simpler. The contrast of black and white is very bold. It is not very informative but it does catch a lot of attention. It’s very striking. I think the writing works well against the background because it stands out against the black and its big and bold, however the colours are bit random against the rest of the cover. I think the artist is represented as a rapper because of the dark colours on the covers, he also looks mysterious. The ideas which we have gained from this digipack are that keeping plain and simple looks professional. Also using a bold title against a plain background is very eye-catching.

This digipak is all basically one colour. The filter looks like an orange kind of sepia colour. This shows a vintage look. Also the colour relates to title of the album 'Dessert rose' because deserts are full of sand and colour gives a sandy look. The pictures are simple but makes the mood of the digipak look calm. It might be this way because the artists songs might be calm and opra like.

Task 1

Task 1: Audience

1.    We are expecting the digipack to look bright and colourful e.g. pinks and blues, to attract the viewers but also we want it to be in sync with the genre of the song. We would like the cover of the digipack to have the band on it or a logo of some kind that matches the band. I think if it’s too busy like with lots of writing everywhere or a variety of pictures then it would look to chaotic and give the wrong impression of our song. Our songs genre is pop and the song is happy and chirpy, so a simple cover would suite the cover of the digipack just fine.

From the questionnaire we did, we asked if the people still bought CD’s, the majority ticked yes for this so now we know that our focus group are likely to buy a digipack with the CD in if we made one. We as a group still buy CD’s and our target audience is around are age, so with this information we can interpret out likes and dislikes onto the digipack as well as asking around and hopefully we will have come up with the perfect digipack to sell tour audience.

In our group we asked each other if we still brought music magazines. We all said no apart from one of us who said vary rarely. Teenagers now days are more likely to download or search things on the internet that they want to buy. Because of this we will need to up our game when making the magazine to make it more appealing to our audience and give great information inside and attractive colours and pictures on the cover to draw them in.

We used sources from the internet to find out about our band that we are doing a cover of. We needed to find out about their background e.g.  What awards they’ve won since they started, how they formed there band, why they started as a band etc. We needed to find this information to gain a better knowledge of the band and to see if we can get in contact with them.

2.    The methods that we have used are questionnaires, focus groups and internet sites. The strengths of the questionnaires is to gain knowledge of what likes and dislikes our age group has. Also we can get a lot of information in one go because there are all on individual sheets. The weaknesses of this type of method is that people may lie or over exaggerate there answers, or they may not find the time to do it or just refuse. Also questionnaires don’t go into specific detail without being bias, and people may not understand what the questions are asking so they cannot ask us what they mean because we were not there when they was handed out.

The strengths of our focus group are that they give us a good idea of what that age group likes. A weakness is that it was only a handful of pupils and there might not have been enough people to express their different thoughts and opinions.

The strengths of using the internet are that there are so many different sites we can look at and we can gain a lot of information that way. Also there are plenty of different websites to look at to make sure the information we was obtaining was correct. Some weakness of the internet is that some sites such a Wikipedia have a section where you can input your own information; however some people may put something that is completely false about the subject you’re searching for.

Some of the things we would do differently about these methods are making the questionnaire more detailed about what we want to know and not having such a wide answer space. Also we could have asked more people for our focus group to make sure that information we obtained is reliable and valid.
